Like stepping out of the city and into a perfect country cottage, a visit to the Frothy Monkey is unlike any other Nashville coffee shop experience. Tables adorned with fresh wildflowers, shortened business hours, and abundant postings detailing the shops commitment to providing the most organic products, it is immediately obvious that the Monkey aims for an older, more environmentally savvy crowd. An extensive sandwich menu features dishes named Ned, Larry, and Lou while their specialty coffees go by the Monkey Mocha and the Turtle Latte. There’s more to their food than the names though. All over the store are testaments to their organic ingredients and fair-trade coffee practices. They take great pride in offering the food and coffee drinks that are the best for not only their customers but also the world around them. The shop is housed in just that: a renovated house. Comfy booths line the wall of the cottage’s main room filled to the brim with coffee tables of every shape and size. A winding staircase adds to the homey atmosphere while an enormous patio provides ample seating outside. All that seating and free wireless (except at lunchtime when most of their customers prefer to eat and run) make the Monkey perhaps the best study spot in town. Looking around, the majority of people in the shop at any given time are sitting alone, taking advantage of the quiet, classy atmosphere to get some cramming done. Too bad they have to get it all done by 7 p.m. when the Monkey closes surprisingly early. Perhaps aiming for the business crowd and not nocturnal college students, the Frothy Monkey (less than two blocks from Portland Brew) offers Belmont students a unique place to get away from the hustle of campus life, get a little studying done, and still make it back by dinner time.
