“Bartered Bride” opera opens on Nov. 10

While Italian and German operas are most common, Belmont University’s opera opera highlights a Czech romantic comedy – The Bartered Bride.

Set in a Bohemian country village, the opera tells a story of how true love wins despite disagreeing parents and a persistent marriage broker.

The three-act opera was written by Karel Sabina and composed by Bedrich Smetana, and helped foster the success of Czech music as a whole.

The lead roles include Haley Arrington and Elizabeth Pirtle as Marie, Luke Selker as Vasek, and Ryan Traub, Berkeley Montes, Cody Muller and Matthew Adrian as the marriage broker.

The opera is free for students, $10 for adults and $5 for seniors 65+, faculty, staff and non-Belmont students. It shows at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 through Nov. 12 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Troutt Theater. Performances may last up to three hours.

For those looking around for convocation credits, the opera fulfills Culture & Arts credit.
