Beyond Baptist : Roman Catholicism largest denomination in class of 2018

Abundant light streams through the windows of the chapel on a sunny September Sunday, mingling with the flicker of candlelight and the lilt of liturgy. A small group of congregants, heads bowed in prayer, kneel and prepare for the communion they are about to receive. A priest, enrobed with heavy garments and authority, stands behind an altar draped with a white cloth. Atop the cloth sit a crucifix and candlesticks. Music wafts through the chapel, worshipful and warm. All of t

Spaced out: New visitor parking lot causes campus controversy

Senior leadership decided this summer to convert the Hitch and Massey Performing Arts Center parking lot on 17th Avenue into a visitors-only lot this summer–thus closing its 43 spots to the students and faculty the lot once served. And many of them are not happy about it. “It’s a slap in the face to staff in particular,” said art professor Jim Meaders. Meaders teaches in the Leu Center for Visual Arts, one of the buildings affected by this decision; the others include the MPA

Low water pressure prompts WAC evacuation

A sudden drop in water pressure set off fire alarms in the Wedgewood Academic Center Thursday afternoon, sending a surge of surprised students and faculty out into the chilly weather. The unexpected drop in pressure in the water pipes was picked up by sensors in WAC, which took the change to mean the fire sprinklers were on, Vice President for Administration and University Counsel Jason Rogers said. “The signal that’s sent to the fire system is similar to the signal that woul

Losing serendipity: why the WAC needs billboards

The Wedgewood Academic Center has 30 spacious classrooms, 430 underground parking spaces, 186,000 square feet of elegant neo-classical design and strikingly blank walls. With the construction of McWhorter Hall, the Inman Health Sciences Building and the Baskin Center, university policies have intensified to try and bring a unified aesthetic to campus. But by attempting to foster a cohesive university atmosphere, the administration’s policies have limited ways for students and

    WACked Out

College is a time of searching and exploring, and never is this more true than when looking for classrooms. Unfortunately for students of all ages, navigating the new Wedgewood Academic Building is a search that never seems to end. Finding one’s way through the WAC’s maze-like halls has fostered a sense of unease for students attempting to reach their classes on time. An intricate stairwell system and elevators that only reach certain floors are at the heart of the problem. S

Student feedback leads to campus Chick-fil-A and Starbucks

Students have steadily rushed to try the new eateries on campus since the semester’s start on Aug. 20. The new Wedgewood Academic Center is home to We Proudly Serve Starbucks Coffee and Sandella’s Flatbread Café and the Curb Café has been renovated to make room for an express version of Chick-fil-A. “As we try to evolve, we get a master plan in place, and then we go by the numbers. In two years, we’ve transformed almost everything on this campus,” said Kyle Grover, director o
