Identity theft real threat to students, can be prevented through vigilance

With a life dominated by tests, papers and studying, the last thing a college student wants to think about is having his or her identity stolen. Unfortunately, that’s reality. Social media sites, credit cards, online shopping – there are more ways than ever for a student, or anyone, to have his or her identity stolen. Phishing scams, which involve people posing as legitimate companies in order to get information, are also becoming more common. “They can do it randomly. That’s

Bystander intervention program encourages the Bruin community to speak up

As colleges nationwide continue to address the issue of sexual assault, Belmont is revamping its bystander intervention program to directly teach students who witness criminal activity how to intervene and to speak up. Plans are under way for a new Metro police precinct in the Edgehill neighborhood that would serve Belmont, Lipscomb and Vanderbilt universities, along with the Edgehill, 12South, Green Hills, Hillsboro Village and Oak Hill neighborhoods. While negotiations to secure land in Edgehill are ongoing, Police Chief Steve Anderson says they hope to have the new location open by fall 2012. The new precinct, dubbed “Midtown Hills,” will help Metro better coordinate with the universitie

Songs from a squad car, security officer on the road with Carolina Rain…and back

In his trademark Crayola blue uniform and an unassuming black baseball cap, Marvin Evatt, 36, doesn’t seem much different from the average campus security officer. But as he weaves his way through throngs of aspiring Belmont musicians, he sometimes wishes he could tell them his story. “Once I realized that I was going to come up here, I started reading books about Nashville and about the music business.  And I thought I had it down. I thought I knew exactly how it was going t
