Belmont men’s basketball head coach Casey Alexander made $1.16 million in the 2023 fiscal year, making him the highest-paid employee at Belmont.
He made more than Belmont President Greg Jones, the next highest-paid employee who
earned $1.09 million.
The salaries are detailed in Belmont’s 990 IRS tax form – a document filed by nonprofit organizations.
After analyzing the form and comparing it to public databases listing other coaches’ salaries,
Alexander is the highest-paid men’s basketball coach in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The next highest-compensated basketball coach in the MVC was Brian Wardle from Bradley University with $882,269.
The lowest reported salary was David Ragland at University of Evansville with $299,443.
The average publicly reported salary for men’s basketball head coaches in the MVC was around $500,000.
In addition to his base salary, Alexander received $100,866 in “other compensation” totaling $1.16 million including a golf membership which “enables opportunities for the Coach to connect with basketball supporters,” said April Hefner, vice president of marketing and
communications for Belmont.
The university also made a $59,274 supplemental contribution to Alexander’s retirement plan.

“Coaches’ salaries are determined by the athletic director in consultation with university leadership, examining individual performance based on the job description and annual
goals,” she said.
Sophomore Emily Ellis did not go to any men’s basketball games last year and said the amount Alexander is paid was too much.
“I just feel like for the amount we’re paying for school, nobody should be making over a million dollars,” Ellis said.
As president of the Motivational Organization of Belmont, Noah Stevens’ job is to get students like Ellis to pack the stands at basketball games.
He has been to all but one or two home games and has seen Alexander’s success with the team.
“He has a legacy here... So like, I can understand them paying more for him,” Stevens said.
Stevens and other supporters of Alexander point to the success the team had as a reason for his high salary.
The Belmont men’s basketball team went 22-11 overall and 13-7 in conference play in the 2024-2025 season and finished fourth in the MVC.
“Belmont is one of only 21 programs in the nation with 140 or more victories since the start of the 2019-20 season,” said Greg Sage, Associate Athletic Director for Broadcasting & Media Relations.
Alexander’s conference record is 122-38, winning 76% percent of conference games.
“Alexander has one of the best conference records in the nation over the last eight seasons,” Sage said.
When reaching out to talk to Alexander, Belmont Athletics declined to comment citing “a standing policy to not comment on coach or administration compensation.”
