Meredith Mills loved her family and her dogs.

“She's very sweet, very caring, kind of soft spoken, she was genuine,” said Kenneth Jordan, Mills’ professor.

“She loved spending time with her family and her dog,” he said. “She always thought about other people first.”

Mills, who died over the weekend, wanted to use her compassion towards people and turn it into a career.

She was a hospitality and tourism management major and a member of the Hospitality and Tourism Event Planning Club. She wanted to work in the industry after graduation.

In addition to her professional goals, she loved dance, pottery and photography classes, said Belmont president Greg Jones in an email to campus.

However, that is not what will be remembered most about her. Above all, she was known for her compassion towards others, Jordan said.

Jordan was Mills’ adviser and the only instructor in her major. He had her as a student in almost every class.

He says he will remember her as someone who radiated joy and kindness, even if it took her a little while to come out of her shell.

As part of her thinking of others, she and Jordan bonded over their dogs’ favorite toys, turning it into a tradition of getting them for each other.

“She had just got her dog and he was tearing up all of his toys, and she was like, ‘he tears everything up and except for the white toys,’ and I was like, well, my dog did the same thing, you need these lamb chops.
So, I brought her some lamb chops, and her dog didn't tear them up anymore, so then later in the semester she brought me some lamb chops,” Jordan said.

Her character, although through smaller acts of generosity, showed that it was actually a deeper part of who she was, he said.

Belmont Counseling can be reached during hours at 615-460-6856 as well as the TimelyCare app, which is available 24/7 to all students.
