Belmont Announces Death of Student

Samuel Sherman, a Belmont graduate student, U.S. Army Veteran and drummer died on Monday.  

 

Sherman was 39 years old and most known for his big heart and joyful spirit. 

 

“You’ve brought so much joy into so many people’s lives and I wish so badly that you could’ve seen it,” said Lyssa Coulter, Sherman’s fiancée, in an Instagram post. 

 

The two made music together, with Sherman being the drummer behind Coulter’s vocals.

Dozens of people commented on Coulter’s post, remarking on how kind and joyful Sherman was. 

 

“Oh my gosh, my heart just absolutely shattered for you.... He will be missed so much,” said one comment by Instagram user brennabone. 

 

Belmont University president Greg Jones sent out a campus-wide email on Wednesday informing the student body of Sherman’s death. 

 

“He brought a wealth of experience to his classmates and was known as an enthusiastic, insightful presence in the classroom,” said Jones in the email, “His peers and faculty describe him as a light in the room, loved and respected by all who knew him here.” 

 

Sherman is survived by his fiancé Lyssa Coulter and his uncle, Mitchell Lee Sherman.  


Funeral information is pending.
