Belmont baseball knocks down the ‘Dores, 8-5

The Belmont Baseball team defeated Vanderbilt 8-5 in a stellar performance at First Tennessee Park on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Jack Rettig picked up the win as the Bruins took down their cross-town rivals just days after the Commodores moved up to No. 8 in the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings.

The game was close up to the 4th inning, being tied at one. But a string of walks, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Matt Cogen started a five-run rally which gave the Bruins the lead.

The Commodores managed to scrape up four runs between the 5th and 9th innings but it wasn’t enough to stop Belmont’s young, strong pitching.

Cogen was key for the Bruins Wednesday night win, going 2-4 with an RBI, a double, and three runs. Senior Kyle Conger also had an RBI along with two doubles. Both Junior Chris Hadden and senior Austin Reynolds recorded two RBI’s.

Freshman Kyle Brennan was the only pitcher to take the mound for more than one inning for the Bruins, pitching a hitless 8th and 9th inning to secure the Belmont victory.

Brennan struck out four, walked none and allowed only one unearned run.

The Bruins, now 8-12, will host UT Martin this weekend as they continue conference play. The series opener will be this Friday at 4 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park.
