The women’s basketball team defeated the Brown Bears 83-61 to win its first home game of the season.
Sophomore guard Quinn Eubank got fouled early in the game, leading to two free throws to kick off scoring for the Bruins.
After a back-and-forth quarter, the Bruins pulled away to end the first quarter leading 23-19 that was helped by some late-quarter defense, including a steal from graduate guard Tuti Jones and a block from junior center KK Brodie.
The Bruins lost momentum in the second quarter, shooting only 26% from the field while Brown picked up the pace to lead the Bruins 37-35 at the half.
“I think it’s human nature when you get good looks and you don’t make them to get down and to maybe be a little hesitant,” Belmont head coach Bart Brooks said.
However, the Bruins were able to regroup for the second half.
The Bruins started the third quarter with a 9-0 scoring run, kicked off by a three-pointer from graduate guard Avery Strickland.
The team continued to battle through the third quarter, which ended with a buzzer-beater shot from sophomore forward Hillary Fuller to put the Bruins up 56-52.
“I think, our team, we struggled our way through that a little bit, and we got out of it,” Brooks said.
The fourth quarter was the Bruins’ to dominate, kicked off by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Sanaa Tripp.
The team shot 61% from the field and 62% from the three-point line to outscore the Bears 27-9.
Another three-pointer from Tripp called the game, making the Bruins 1-1 on the season and 1-0 at home.
Fuller led the Bruins in scoring with 17 points, while Brown’s Alyssa Moreland led all scorers with 22 points.
The Bruins will play on the road Thursday against No. 8 Tennessee.
