Bruins Fight Flames in Draw

Belmont’s men's soccer team saw its Saturday night game end in a 2-2 stalemate against the University of Illinois Chicago at E.S. Rose Park.
The Bruins started off strong, leading the game 1-0, but UIC came back at the end of the first half and took the lead at the start of the second. Belmont was able to tie it up, but neither team could score the winning point, leaving the game 2-2.
Going into Saturday’s match, the Bruins had won three of their last four matches and remained unbeaten.
“You can’t worry about what’s in the past,” said Belmont’s head coach David Costa. “You’re only as good as your next game every week.”
Belmont scored first in the 14th minute on a goal by senior Lucas Wolthers, taking a 1-0 lead.
UIC responded in the 41st minute when junior Sebastian Khoury scored, tying the game 1-1.
In the 59th minute, senior Sota Nakazono scored the second goal for UIC and took the lead over Belmont.
After the Bruins' second corner kick, Nakazono fouled freshman Judah McCloud. The Flames challenged the call, but the penalty kick was upheld following a video review.
Graduate John McDowell scored the penalty kick for Belmont in the 64th minute, tying the game 2-2.
Neither team was able to take the edge over the remaining 26 minutes, and the game ended in a tie.
At 6-4-3, the Bruins remain undefeated in MVC play as they travel to Bowling Green State University on Sunday.
Two of the Bruins' final three matches are on the road, which gives Belmont a preview of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament that starts on November 8.
“We want to win the Missouri Valley this year, and it requires winning road games,” said Costa.
