“Dolly: A True Original Musical” will pack up and head to New York for a Broadway run following a summer of previews and workshops at the Fisher Center.
Through partnerships and networking opportunities, Fisher Center student employees joined the production crew, setting up audio and sound systems, building sets, managing props and assisting in videography.
Students from course subjects such as marketing, fashion design, songwriting and audio engineering worked on the musical this summer, most of them for the first time on a professional musical theatre set.
“I never thought I was going to be able to do a Broadway musical at 19 years old. It just gave me a glimpse of what my career could look like in the future,” sophomore Valeria Santamaria said. “It was my first time working in the theatre department because I’m a motion pictures major and I’ve only done film productions.”
Through these partnerships, students were able to connect with professionals in the media and entertainment industries, including theatre production and Broadway crews.
“We've networked our way through New York at this point, and that's an experience that only Belmont and the Fisher Center can give you,” Santamaria said.
While this event gave students the opportunity to connect with professionals in these fields, it also allowed them to create relationships beyond the show.
“I have made so many meaningful connections. I guess that this kind of happens when you're there for so long and you're in the same space with the same people,” Kennedy Paus said.
Belmont also plans to partner with other organizations to offer more classes that use real-world experiences to enhance students’ learning.
“We're looking at doing other things with other groups in creativity,” Jones said. “Whether that be in healthcare or in entertainment, the relationships really strengthen us for the future.”
