Dr. John Delony named as associate provost and dean of students

After a nationwide search, Belmont announced the hiring of Dr. John Delony as new associate provost and dean of students Wednesday morning.

Delony, who is currently serving as the associate academic dean for student life at Texas Tech University School of Law, will fill the position of Dr. Jeffery Burgin, who resigned in November.

Provost Dr. Thomas Burns had been acting dean of students since November.

Delony will start in the position on May 1, Burns wrote in an email to students and faculty.

Belmont SGA President Shania Jones, who was worried Burgin’s replacement wouldn’t be as involved with students, said she is excited about Belmont’s decision.

“He’s somebody who can be a mentor and do the job at the same time, so that’s great,” Jones said. “And I know he’s someone that’s going to fight for students.”

Provost Thomas Burns was also pleased with the decision to hire Delony.

“I’m really excited that he’s coming here. He’ll be fantastic,” Burns said. “I think something that was really illustrative is that when I was walking him to lunch when he was on campus, at least two or three students said hi to him and one stopped him to make a comment about his presentation.”

“I thought that was really indicative of the person he is — really approachable, able to touch base with students and with administrators and be successful in both.”
