Faculty Senate Discusses Charter School and Faculty Handbook Changes

Anna Blubaugh

Provost David Gregory shot down rumors of Belmont opening up a charter school at the faculty senate’s second meeting of the year.

Belmont was approached by Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter School to potentially open up a charter school that would focus on directing health science students to Belmont.

Belmont has not decided whether to partner with them.

“One of the rumors out there is that sports science is going to give up their building,” said Gregory. “That is not true. Where would exercise science go? That’s a good program, that feeds into our P. T. and O.T., and that is not on the table.”

He said that the administration will examine whether the partnership will benefit Belmont.

“We can look at that, but it has to be a win for Belmont,” said Gregory. “We’re waiting to hear back from them, what they want from us, and what are they willing to fund.”

The Senate also passed its first motion of the semester.

Since Belmont edited its hiring policy to include employees of all different faiths while still predominately hiring Christians, the executive committee wanted to encourage the updating of the Faculty handbook to reflect those changes.

“We do not own the handbook, and so all we can do is recommend changes or adjustments to the faculty handbook to the provost’s office,” said Mark McEntire. “This is a vote just on the process of how we’re going to formulate our input.”

The motion passed unanimously.
