Salsa dancing, a bus trip and a museum display are all set to highlight the importance of Hispanic Culture in Nashville.

“It's really meant for everyone, to welcome people into the culture who have no experience or friends in the culture. It's a way for them to appreciate it and to learn a way to appreciate it, rather than just assuming,” said Denisse Hernandez- Perez, president of the Hispanic Student Association.

With it being Hispanic Heritage Month, students at Belmont University can attend inclusive events centered around “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together” from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.

Hispanic Heritage Month shines a light on Spanish speaking cultures.

When it began in 1968, it spanned just one week.

Now, it’s a full month spent acknowledging the heritage and history of Hispanic people as well as the music, art and food.

Sept. 15 is the anniversary of Latin American independence.

In 1821, five countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua - declared independence from Spanish colonization.

Also, during this month, Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16 while Chile’s is on the 18 and Belize’s is on the 21.

Nashville also recognizes various events as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month, including salsa events and a museum display at the Frist Museum.

The Belmont HSA will be visiting this exhibit on Sept. 28.

“I think the central focus is also to let people know we are not a minority in the United States. We're not a minority in the world. We're actually a part of the global majority,” said Hernandez-Perez.

Belmont’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Day will take place Oct. 3rd from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bell Tower Patio.

There will be food trucks, live music, and performances.

The full calendar of events can be found on the Belmont Hispanic Association’s Instagram, @belmonthsa, which will provide additional information about upcoming events and recognize impactful stories.
