A man was found shot dead early Wednesday morning in a crashed car across from Belmont University.
"There is no threat to the campus. Belmont officers are on scene to monitor and coordinate with Metro Nashville Police Department as needed. Avoid the area,” a Belmont Security alert stated.
The car crashed into a tree on 16th Avenue South and Wedgewood Avenue. Reportedly, when police opened the vehicle, the man was found with suspected gunshot wounds, prompting a homicide investigation.
“It is not a Belmont related event,” Campus Security Chief Mark Labbe said. “It unfortunately happened to end near Belmont.”
MNPD and Campus Security will continue to be in contact as more information becomes available.
"Updates will be provided as MNPD provides them and advises the information can be released to the public,” the statement said.
No Belmont students, faculty or staff were involved in the incident, Labbe said.
“It’s also important that they’re getting news sources that are going to get them exterior campus things,” Labbe said. “If you see something from us, please open it right away and pay attention to it.”
Belmont Counseling can be reached during hours at 615-460-6856 as well as the TimelyCare app, which is available 24/7 to all students.
