Belmont men’s basketball beat Oral Roberts University 90-80 last night in the Curb Event Center.
The Bruins started the game frantic and not able to find their rhythm.
Oral Roberts took advantage of Belmont’s mistakes, beating them to rebounds and making open shots.
The first half ended with the Golden Eagles up 45-31.
When the Bruins came out in the second, they did not seem composed.
The team came out with little momentum as Oral Roberts scored the first points of the half.
Slowly but surely, Belmont started doing the little things right and chipping away at the Golden Eagles’ lead.
A three by freshman Sam Orme, a big block by sophomore Brigham Rogers and a layup by graduate guard Brody Peebles got the crowd fired up as the Bruins took the lead for the first time since they led 2-0.
During the last five minutes, the Bruins decided to lock in and finish offensive chances.
Junior Tyler Lundblade went 5-for-7 from the three-point line, hitting a crucial shot with one minute to go to give Belmont the three-point lead it needed.
The Bruins made their last 12 baskets of the game to secure the 90-80 win.
“I felt like we were a lot more dialed in on the defensive end, we were tougher, we were rebounding extremely well on the defensive end in the second half. We didn’t get necessarily a lot of transition points, but we just played with a lot better rhythm because we got so many more stops on the defensive end,” said head coach Casey Alexander.
Lundblade led the team with 25 points and senior Jonathan Pierre was right behind with 22.
“It just shows the resilience of this team that we were able to stay composed and always finish the game out strong,” said Pierre. “It shows the level of confidence that we have in each other and the camaraderie of the team, and everyone gels on the team so we can make those extra runs to get us in the game.”
The team will travel to Cancun, Mexico, next week for the Cancun Challenge.
Its first matchup is next Tuesday against Loyola Marymount University.
