Belmont Vision Multimedia, Braden Simmons

Welcome to the first edition of "Perfect Pitch" where Belmont Vision staff will give their opinions on the newest releases in the world of music.

This week, we'll be exploring Sabrina Carpenter's newest album, "Short n' Sweet."

Braden Simmons - Managing Editor

Overall Rating: 7.5/10

General Thoughts:

Sabrina closes out the summer of amazing pop music with her new album “Short n’ Sweet.” As someone who considers themself a Sabrina Carpenter fan, I was excited when I first heard about the announcement, but I feel like I left the album missing something. The album title is rather fitting as there are only nine new songs paired with two of her previous releases, “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please.”

It has tracks that, in true Sabrina fashion, are so fun and make me want to stick my head out a metaphorical sunroof and let my hair blow in the breeze, but I think where the album lacks is in the consistency of quality and style through the second half of the album. Overall, an enjoyable listen!

Favorite Song: “Bed Chem” - I’m really a sucker for Shakespearean linguistics.

Least Favorite Song: “Don’t Smile”

Which album do you think is better: This one or “emails i can’t send”?

This album comes is a close second to “emails i can’t send,” but I still listen to too many songs from “emails i can’t send” to put “Short n’ Sweet” above it, so currently I still would put it higher in my ranking.

With this album, did Sabrina Carpenter certify herself as the artist of the summer?

Personally, I don’t think Sabrina was the artist of the summer but in reality, there were simply too many artists flourishing to pick a singular artist for the summer. Sabrina was one of the top artists of the summer in my mind, along with Chappell Roan and Charli XCX.

Ty Wellemeyer - Editor-in-Chief

Overall Rating: I’m going to give it a nice 7/10.

General Thoughts:

It addressed how annoying it can be when people don’t use the right “there,” “their” and “they are,” a top pet peeve of mine. In all seriousness, it’s a fun album that has plenty of humor and enjoyable lines that make all 36 minutes feel like a breeze. I may get some flack for saying this considering the alleged beef between both artists, but I saw a lot of parallels between this album and Olivia Rodrigo’s “GUTS” in their unapologetic styles. I’m excited to see what Sabrina does next.

Favorite Song:

It has to be “Taste.” It has that sass and wit that Sabrina’s known for.  It was an electrifying first song that prepared me for the rest of the album.

Least Favorite Song:

“Don’t Smile.” Going from the sassy nature of Sabrina to one where she’s wishing the guy were to miss her was a major shift that I didn’t like.

Which album do you think is better: This one or “emails i can’t send”?

Yes. “Short n’ Sweet” feels like an evolved and more mature version of “emails i can’t send” where Carpenter seems to feel more comfortable with her humor and style. I love both albums, but this one is just a smidge better.

With this album, did Sabrina Carpenter certify herself as the artist of the summer?

She’s currently neck-and-neck with Chappell Roan and Charli XCX for that title. I think Chappell takes it because of her skyrocketing to superstardom and selling out every music festival under the sun. But I won’t disagree with you if you say it’s Sabrina.

Overall Rating: 7/10

General Thoughts:

I think this is one of Sabrina’s most all-around cohesive sonic experiences. The viral traction of “Nonsense” seemed to guide the kind of sound audiences wanted from her. From there, her songwriting read as a lot more pointed both at its alleged muses and the humor she knows will get her hits! I believe this is her strongest body of work yet.

Favorite Song: “Sharpest Tool” and “Taste.”

Least Favorite Song: “Dumb & Poetic.”

Which album do you think is better: This one or “emails i can’t send”?

“Short n’ Sweet” for sure!

With this album, did Sabrina Carpenter certify herself as the artist of the summer?

For me, Sabrina’s neck-and-neck with Chappell Roan and Charli XCX, also known as “The Powerpop Girls.”

Madeleine Bradford - A&E Editor

Overall Rating: A solid 7.5/10!

General Thoughts:

“Short n’ Sweet” is an infectious representation of Sabrina Carpenter’s mastery of pop hooks, charming relatability and hilarious commentary on relationships. When initially listening to this album, I thought it was very strong all the way through. The project presents a nice balance of shimmery pop hits and vulnerable ballads. A very enjoyable listen all around!

Favorite Song:

“Juno.” No comment!

Least Favorite Song:

“Sharpest Tool” – not because I dislike it, but because it doesn’t stand out to me like the rest of the album.

Which album do you think is better: This one or “emails i can’t send”?

I personally prefer “Short n’ Sweet.” The album has so much variety and to me, it’s the project Carpenter has been prepping to release for years. It’s cool to see her artistry flourish, and I look forward to seeing what’s next for her!

With this album, did Sabrina Carpenter certify herself as the artist of the summer?

When I think about who the artist of the summer is, Charli XCX or Chappell Roan instantly comes to mind. However, through this release, Carpenter capped off the summer in an effective way. This album is brimming with catchy melodic hooks and striking relatability. It would serve as the soundtrack to the transition between summer and autumn.
