In honor of the late composer Steven Sondheim, Belmont Musical Theatre’s production of “Sondheim on Sondheim,” takes the stage Friday night.

Sondheim has written countless musicals that have been on Broadway for five decades and gone into film adaptations like “West Side Story,” “Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd.”

In the Troutt Theatre, students and Nashville residents alike will get a masterclass in Sondheim’s music, life and creative processes in crafting these renowned works.

Student Catie Whittet describes Sondheim and his lyricism and expertise with the highest praise.

“Sondheim is the Shakespeare of our generation,” she said.

Nancy Allen, the coordinator of the musical theater program, said the show is more than just a musical.

“This is a musical review that highlights the melodic and lyrical expertise of Sondheim’s music while featuring elements of his life,” Allen said.

“Sondheim on Sondheim” runs Friday through Sunday.
