Sled Smart: Creative Ways to Celebrate the Snow Days

With a forecast of heavy snow over the weekend, some Belmont students will participate in snow day activities for the first time.

Nashville is under a winter storm warning and can expect to see between three-to-eight inches of snow over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. This opens the possibility for cancelled classes, less students outside and, of course, sledding.

“I’ve never sledded before… that would be so fun,” Belmont freshman Myah Patterson said.

Although sleds are available for purchase at various locations, some students will look for cheaper alternatives. However, Hillsboro Hardware employee Josh Morefield warned that it could be a dangerous practice.

“College students before you have found out the hard way some things they can use instead of sleds,” he said.

Still, he suggested using pizza boxes, trash can lids or stray pieces of cardboard as effective, low-cost options.

Many students had similar suggestions, but freshmen Morgan Higman and Shea Meyer suggested a jacket, or even an unconventional, more cooperative sledding experience.

“You ask your friend and then sit on him,” said Higman.

Campus Security Corporal Grandberry recommended using storage tubs to go sledding, but he also had strong recommendations about what not to sled with: mattresses, chairs, doors or anything else that’s Belmont property.

“If you did not bring it to the school, do not try to sled with it,” he said.

Whether students choose to use sleds, pizza boxes or storage tubs, Grandberry emphasized the importance of caution.

“We recommend that you don't sled on any streetways or anything like that. And then also just be mindful of cars,” said Grandberry. “We don't want any incidents to happen.”
