Belmont women’s basketball outlasted Murray State University in a 96-89 shootout Saturday night.

The victory kept the Bruins on top of the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-1 conference record and extended their winning streak to eight-straight games.

The final score reflected both Belmont’s highest scoring offensive output as well as the most points it has allowed in a game this season.

Despite going cold and trailing by seven heading into halftime, the Bruins caught fire and scored 61 points in the second half.

“We didn’t make a lot of adjustments. We just tried to refocus on the things that are important in our program and get back to playing how we play and being more aggressive defensively. I thought we were way too passive for stretches of that first half,” said head coach Bart Brooks.

Murray State’s Katelyn Young led all scorers with 39 points.

Belmont had three scorers reach the 20-point mark: Tuti Jones with 29, Kendal Cheesman with 24 and Kendall Holmes with 21.

It was the first time since 2017 that three different Bruins have scored at least 20 points in the same game.

Belmont’s scoring barrage was spearheaded by its 3-point shooting. The team made a season-high 16 3-pointers on 57 percent shooting.

Since their previous loss, where the Bruins scored just 55 points, they have averaged 80.1 points per game during the winning streak.

They will look to keep up that scoring output and extend their streak to nine consecutive wins when they take on Valparaiso on Friday.
