PharmD/MBA program gives pharmacy students competitive edge

An initiative at Belmont University is giving pharmacy students an edge against competition in an ever-changing health care industry. Starting in fall 2015, Belmont is offering a dual PharmD/MBA, the only such degree in Middle Tennessee. Pharmacy students can finish both a Doctorate of Pharmacy and a Master of Business Association degree in four years, while most similar programs require a minimum of five years to complete, according to Belmont’s website. The idea for the dua

Dropping the beat to drop cancer

As part of Belmont’s Up ‘Til Dawn child cancer awareness week, the Beaman Tuesday night felt less like a student center and more like a scene reminiscent of “8 Mile.” But instead of losing themselves in the music, students were selfless as they rapped to end childhood cancer during the “Rap it Up: Rapping Up the Battle with Childhood Cancer” event. The event, which served the dual purpose of promoting both Up ‘Til Dawn and Belmont’s hip-hop community, also helped raise funds

    Counseling offers extended hours

Belmont student Grace Evans, a sophomore music business major, passed away Wednesday. With permission from her family, university officials informed students around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. In lieu of these events, Belmont Counseling Services and University Ministries have extended their hours and opened their offices at 8 a.m. Thursday morning to accommodate any students’ needs. Counseling Services is located above the cafeteria in the Gabhart Student Center. In an email f

    Warm up with winter Shakespeare

Escape the freezing winds of winter by losing yourself in the romance of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, “Twelfth Night.” The Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s winter production follows the story of twins Viola and Sebastian who have been separated by a violent shipwreck. After washing up on the shores of an unknown land— and believing her brother to be lost forever— Viola disguises herself as a man and finds work as a page in the house of Duke Orsino. Set in the m

    Kappa Sigma members disband colony

A little less than a year into their experiment, students from the Nashville colony of the Kappa Sigma fraternity have decided to close the doors of their branch. The decision came from the colony’s executive council following a meeting between Belmont officials and representatives from the national office on Dec. 2. “We are no longer going to continue operations as a colony or a confirmed charter,”  said Mike Crecca, the former grandmaster of ceremonies of the colony. Demonstrators gather at ribbon cutting ceremony

Against a celebratory backdrop of student and administration collaboration, approximately 20 student demonstrators gathered at the South Lawn Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Wednesday morning to protest former resident assistant Danny Zydel’s firing and broader issues permeating the university. “We want transparency,” said freshman protester Sam Britt. The demonstrators were largely comprised of Zydel’s former freshmen residents from Patton Hall. Before the event began, they assemble

President Bob Fisher is one of the highest-paid private university presidents in the country, raking in $1,119,690 in the 2012 fiscal year, according to public tax forms. His total compensation increased 13.5 percent from his $968,435 salary as reported in the 2011 fiscal year. The fiscal year runs from June 1 to May 31. Fisher’s salary started with a base pay of $819,021. He also earned $141,268 in bonuses and $222,863 in deferred compensation to retirement or other funds. A

    Water runs thicker than blood

Rivals like Belmont and Lipscomb usually don’t join forces together. But when it’s for a good cause to raise money for organizations such as Blood: Water Mission, it proves sometimes water runs thicker than blood. Both universities are partnering to raise money for Blood: Water Mission in a competitive fundraiser called Battle for the Pump, the first event of its kind. The idea of the contest is to see which school can reach the $5,000 goal first–for an ideal total of $10,000

Christmas at Belmont didn’t fall flat

Faculty, students and alumni gathered in Massey Concert Hall on Saturday night to watch the annual Christmas at Belmont performance to kick off the holiday season. Every other year, Christmas at Belmont is filmed and airs on PBS, but this year was not a filming year for the event. Opening the night with “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Jazzmin sang with sweet harmonies as snowflakes were projected on the side walls. Its jazzy sound set a warm and comfortable mood, an

    YAL displays first-ever censorship wall

The Belmont chapter of Young Americans for Liberty displayed a censorship wall under the bell tower Friday, the first of its kind in the entire national organization’s history. The group, described by its official website as being a “pro-liberty organization,” adheres to ideals of small government generally ascribed to the Libertarian party. As such, the censorship wall featured three small-government quotes from individuals such as George Orwell and John Adams. Throughout th

How BU would deal with an active shooter

Belmont’s Campus Security would coordinate with Metro dispatch and use alerts and staff training in the scenario of an active shooter on campus. Last night, a gunman opened fire on students in the Florida State University library, injuring three people before he was killed by police. Campus Security would respond to this situation by first securing the location while coordinating with Nashville’s emergency response services as they arrive on scene, Chief of Campus Security Pa

Kappa Sigma president held liable for pledge hospitalization, placed on limited probation

Kappa Sigma colony president and presidential scholar Peter Johnson is facing disciplinary action from Belmont University after one of his fraternity brothers was hospitalized on Halloween. Johnson was put on limited probation on Saturday following a disciplinary hearing with Janelle Briscoe, the director of community accountability. Johnson said limited probation means that if there is one more incident he will face suspension or expulsion. When reached for comment, Briscoe

SGA holds open forum meeting to hear student Vision 2020 concerns

Seven students voiced their concerns to student government Monday night on how the increase in enrollment coupled with a lack of space on-campus is negatively affecting student organizations and Belmont as a whole. About 20 non-SGA students attended, the most at any congress meeting this semester. Monday’s meeting followed a week of extended office hours, a measure implemented by SGA to meet with students one-on-one. This was done to hear individual student concerns in light

WBB battle down to the wire against Vandy in season opener

Photos: Andrew Hunt In the final minutes of the season opener, the Belmont women’s basketball team put together a furious comeback against Vanderbilt. But the attempt came up short for the Bruins in a 65-58 loss to the Commodores Friday night. Although the team trailed for most of the night, Belmont took its first lead with two minutes to play on a layup from freshman Sally McCabe. But Vanderbilt scored eight unanswered points to seal the win. “If you would have told me we wo

Fisher says he made a “mistake” using word “segregation” at Vision 2020

University President Robert Fisher visited members of the Black Student Association Friday morning in a special closed meeting to discuss comments he made at the Vision 2020 Town Hall. “We talked about Vision 2020 and my mistake in using the word, ‘segregation,’” Fisher said in an interview Friday afternoon. At the Vision 2020 Town Hall on Monday, Fisher was asked if the university would consider adding new historically black Greek organizations to campus. There is currently

Student government extends office hours to hear feedback over town hall

Students filed into the Student Government Association office this week saying they did not feel they were included in Belmont president Dr. Robert Fisher’s Vision 2020 plan and were not satisfied with the answers he gave during Monday’s Town Hall meeting. Belmont’s SGA opened its doors this week to hear concerns over student feedback, numbers and clarification on Fisher’s responses to questions asked during Monday’s Vision 2020 Town Hall Meeting. PREVIEW: MBB returners and newcomers ignite a team effort

Gone are the big-time scoring players who drop 20-plus points per game. Now, the Belmont men’s basketball team will have to rely on pure sweat and an overall team effort in order to continue its usual success in the 2014-15 season. “Having Ian and Kerron as alumni doesn’t put any points on the scoreboard,” said junior guard Craig Bradshaw. “We have to go out and show everybody that we’re a new Belmont team, and we’ll do the same things those guys did ourselves.” Craig Bradsha

Student entrepreneurs run successful online startup What’s Hubbin’

Belmont students Channing Moreland, Makenzie Stokel and Seth Clarke have undertaken the task of starting up the company What’s Hubbin’ that compiles all of the musical events happening in the Nashville, Tenn. area in a one-stop calendar for consumers. The three students released their first site a year ago, and this week the team plans on releasing an updated site with a new design and more mobile-friendly features. The idea first came to the group after it first arrived in N

Students raise concerns over diversity, transparency and growth at Vision 2020 meeting

While university President Bob Fisher revealed his seven strategic priorities when crafting Vision 2020, Belmont students were more concerned with questions regarding Belmont’s growth, student fees and diversity at Monday’s Vision 2020 Town Hall Meeting. “I think that the revealing of Vision 2020 was a great opportunity for students to see the strategic priorities set forth by Dr. Fisher,” said Jeanette Morelan, Student Government Association President. “I think it was also a

Camelot’s golden age shines in Nashville

“Camelot,” Lerner and Loewe’s innovative retelling of the legendary story of King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot, captivated Nashvillians with its opening performance on Tuesday at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. This creative musical is a revival of Lerner and Loewe’s classic version that modernizes the production. Its updated look includes new costumes and a fresh set design, and it seemed to reflect influences of Monty Python and “Game of Thrones” by combining witty
