Belmont organizations oppose Safe Campus Act

Belmont students and organizations have recently expressed their opposition to the Safe Campus Act of 2015. The Safe Campus Act has been proposed to protect those who are accused of sexual assault. In doing so, it requires the sexual assault victims to take cases directly to the local authorities rather than to administration at his or her prospective university. Under this act, if a sexual assault case were to be brought to Belmont University’s attention, the administration

Ask Phi Tau lends an ear and a hand to Belmont, Nashville community

Students may have seen posters with an Ask Jeeves-like logo, complete with red text and cartoonish butler, displayed around campus. Even if they didn’t know what the posters were advertising, though, there would be an easy way to find out. All they would have to do is ask. Ask Phi Tau, a project launched by Phi Kappa Tau in March 2014 that centers on philanthropy and service, seeks to put a different spin on both. Instead of focusing on one isolated event, the fraternity keep

Sororities still seeking to resolve spacing issues

As Belmont’s student population grows every year, so do its four sororities, and finding meeting spaces which adequately suit their needs has become a persistent problem. Danni Kosturko, former Panhellenic president and current senior member of Alpha Gamma Delta, voiced these concerns last semester at both the State of the Student Body and Vision 2020 Town Hall meetings. Provost Dr. Thomas Burns responded at the Student Body town hall, saying the use of the spaces operates on

Greekcap: A look back at last semester

Whether you’re talking about the yogurt, the citizens of the economically-recovering country or Belmont’s sororities and fraternities, it’s a good time to be Greek. Belmont’s six Greek organizations are growing exponentially, raising funds to match. And their statistics from last semester prove it. Below are some facts and figures from the fall 2014 semester, including statements from each of the Greek organization’s presidents and awards earned. Fundraising is done primarily

    Kappa Sigma members disband colony

A little less than a year into their experiment, students from the Nashville colony of the Kappa Sigma fraternity have decided to close the doors of their branch. The decision came from the colony’s executive council following a meeting between Belmont officials and representatives from the national office on Dec. 2. “We are no longer going to continue operations as a colony or a confirmed charter,”  said Mike Crecca, the former grandmaster of ceremonies of the colony. The co

Kappa Sigma president held liable for pledge hospitalization, placed on limited probation

Kappa Sigma colony president and presidential scholar Peter Johnson is facing disciplinary action from Belmont University after one of his fraternity brothers was hospitalized on Halloween. Johnson was put on limited probation on Saturday following a disciplinary hearing with Janelle Briscoe, the director of community accountability. Johnson said limited probation means that if there is one more incident he will face suspension or expulsion. When reached for comment, Briscoe

    Why I went Greek

The issues in Greek life communities have been a hot topic on college campuses in recent years. Hazing is a terrible thing and no person should have to experience any sort of humiliation or uncomfort to prove their worth. The issues of hazing have directly affected the perception of Greek life on college campuses. Just last year the Phi Delta Theta chapter at Belmont University lost its charter on hazing charges. Hazing is one of the most common arguments against going Greek
