Baseball loses 18-3 in Battle of the Boulevard against Lipscomb

The Belmont Bruins baseball team fell to the Lipscomb Bisons at the annual Battle of the Boulevard on Tuesday with a score of 18-3 at E. S. Rose Park.

Before this game, the Bruins had been on a three-game win streak until losing to Morehead State on Friday.

Lipscomb ran its win streak to four after beating the Bruins.

The Bisons pounded out 20 hits against nine different Belmont pitchers. Aaron Hubbell, a freshman from Mt. Juliet, TN, suffered the loss.

Among the nine Bruin pitchers who contributed to the Bisons’ score were sophomore Stone Selby, who gave up four hits and three runs, sophomore Chandler Schultz, who gave up five hits and three runs, and junior Michael Matter, who sacrificed two hits and four runs.

Lipscomb scored early with seven runs in the second inning, sparked by an error to the lead off hitter. Two strikeouts later and the Bruins might have escaped without any damage. But the next eight Bison hitters reached base. Senior Zeke Dodson, Lipscomb’s third baseman, went 4-6 with a home run and five RBIs.

In the fourth, Belmont senior left fielder Devon Gardner tripled and later scored, giving the Bruins their first run of the game. But the Bisons responded with another seven run inning in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Belmont looked as though it could potentially score more than one run when senior Zach Ehrhart scored on a sacrifice fly, making the score 18-3. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, things were starting to look up for the Bruins. However, the game ended quickly with a strikeout, giving the Bisons the victory.

The Bruins will travel to Martin, Tennessee on Friday to take on the University of Tennessee Martin Skyhawks at 6 p.m..
