Volleyball Loses Battle of the Boulevard
Belmont was defeated by its crosstown rival Lipscomb University 3-1 in the Battle of the Boulevard Saturday night, but not without delivering a close and stressful match.
In the fourth set, Lipscomb scored the match-winning point, making the score 25-23. However, Belmont’s head coach, Fritz Rosenberg, challenged the point and, if overruled, Belmont had the chance to tie the sets 2-2 and take it to the fifth set.
However, the call didn’t go Belmont’s way, leaving Lipscomb students to claim the Curb Event Center as theirs for one night.
No one from Belmont was able to comment after the loss.
Belmont scored first, but Lipscomb took an early lead of 8-3 and maintained a five-point lead up until a Bruins timeout with Lipscomb up 15-11.
Lipscomb let Belmont catch up 17-17. After a relentless attack from Lipscomb, the team managed to take the set 25-20.
Belmont set the stage for set two with the first point and an early 8-3 lead. After a Lipscomb timeout, the Bisons closed the gap to 10-9 Bruins.
Belmont refused to go down and defended its lead, 22-17. And with that, Belmont won the set, bringing the match to 1-1.
Set three brought no change and continued its back-and-forth nature. With no more than a two-point difference between the two, the score became tied at 10.
Belmont took a timeout after Lipscomb arrived with a small lead, 16-13, in which the team took full advantage, launching kill after kill at the Bruins.
Lipscomb ended the set 25-17 thanks to senior Ella Durham's six kills in set three.
Set four brought Lipscomb on top out of the gate, going up 8-4. The Bruins took a timeout and began a comeback thanks to Lipscomb errors and tied it 9-9.
Lipscomb took a small lead of 17-15, while Belmont fought to keep the gap minimal.
However, a 3-0 run put Lipscomb up 20-15 as Belmont called a timeout.
The Bruins pushed back and brought up the score to 21-19 in favor of Lipscomb.
As the lead moved up to match point, 24-22, senior Brenna Kauffeld served as Belmont's last hope.
The student section stood as they watched Belmont slowly bring the score up to 24-23.
And they moved to leave as the officials gave Lipscomb the point. Rosenberg challenged the point to no avail, and the 25-23 score became final.
Lipscomb took the match 3-1 and ended with a total of 63 kills. Showing exactly where the team’s strengths were that evening.
Lipscomb’s senior Ella Durham led the team in an impressive 18 kills of her own.
Belmont's sophomore libero Mya Bolton completed 18 digs in response to Lipscomb's powerful offense that night.
After the loss, Belmont will be back on the court Friday to face off against Valparaiso.
