Belmont men’s soccer closed out senior night with a gritty matchup against Drake University, ending in a 1-0 loss.
Before kicking off, the Bruins honored their eight seniors Grant Calvert, Riley Clothier, Brad Dildy, Jimiyu Mark, Dylan Steely, Oscar Hough, Simeon Betapudi, and Parker Forbes for their lasting impact on the team.
The first half featured back-and-forth play and tight defense from both the Bruins and the Bulldogs.
Belmont’s goalkeeper made a total of four saves, giving the Bruins a fighting chance, while they pushed forward with energy and speed.
Physical play was a key factor in the game, Captain Dylan Steely left the field with a cut to his temple after a collision, as well as defender Riley Clothier, who went down after a head-to-head clash before both immediately returned to the game.
Tensions escalated in the second half, with four yellow cards issued to the Bulldogs, including one to their head coach.
Late in the game, Belmont appeared to tie the score on a shot into the back of the net. But the goal was waived off for offside, drawing strong reactions from the stands and the bench.
Despite the overturned goal and several late chances, the Bruins couldn't find an equalizer. The Bruins ended the night with a tough loss and emotions high but showed a relentless fight and heart.
