Belmont women's soccer fought to the very last second against the Drake Bulldogs, earning a 2-2 draw in a competitive encounter marked by yellow cards, intensity, and last-minute drama.
Drake struck in only the first 15 minutes of the half, taking advantage of the early possession and pressure.
In the face of strong efforts from Megan Miller, who stayed locked in defensively, and multiple substitutions to keep players fresh, the Bruins ended the first half struggling 1-0.
Going into the second half, the Belmont bench kept spirits high as the Bruins pushed harder, creating more opportunities to attack. At the 20 minute mark, Belmont scored, but Drake answered back immediately with another goal, putting them back in the lead.
Both benches clashed multiple times with the referees throughout the game, resulting in a yellow card being given to Drake's assistant coach, Max Rosenblum, and Belmont's Kate Virtel.
With under a minute remaining, the Bruins came back with a vengeance. Virtel assisted a clutch equalizer from Belmont captain Lillie Tabor, tying the score 2-2 with only 50 seconds left on the clock.
The goal sent everyone into a celebration, the fans in the stands jumping to their feet and the team running to the bench to celebrate salvaging a hard-fought game.
After the match, Belmont's head coach, Kelsey Cameron, emphasized the importance of
resilience and training. “We had a tough week coming in, but the girls battled tonight,” Cameron said. “We worked on attacking more this week because we felt that we needed a little more of a plan.” -
