Belmont’s Student Government Association laid out its goals for the upcoming semester at the first general assembly of the year.
Returning President Carter Barnett emphasized the importance of serving the community in his opening speech, reiterating that SGA stands for service, goals and all together.
Barnett was reinaugurated as SGA president. He is the first president to serve a second term at Belmont within the last 25 years and the fifth within 75 years.
“Our top priority should be serving the student body and elevating their concerns to administration,” said Barnett. “We do not do this for personal gain. We do this to make Belmont a better place than when we first got here.”
Barnett also highlighted the accomplishments of his last term, which included lengthened dining hours at Chick-Fil-A and Harrington Place Dining and bringing free period products to women’s bathrooms across campus.
SGA decided to continue initiatives in voter registration by helping create BruinVote, a service that allows students to make a voting plan for the 2024 presidential election.
SGA will host a voter registration table below the steps of Harrington Place Dining on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to coincide with National Voter Registration Day.
They will also host tables at It Must be Wednesday until fall break.
“Please encourage your friends back home to vote, and people who are far away from home, start requesting your absentee ballots,” said SGA adviser Derian Hamblin. “We want everyone’s votes to count.”
Students can find more information regarding BruinVote at bruinvote.motivote.us.
