Former Bruin Brenton Flynn made his mark on the men’s golf program over 15 years ago, and he continues to put in the work as the team’s newest assistant coach.
While playing for the university from 2002 to 2006, Flynn competed in 110 rounds and recorded a career average of 75.4 during his four years as a student-athlete.
“It’s been fun to get re-engaged with the golf team. I see myself in a lot of the guys on our team and it’s been fun to try to share some of the wisdom I’ve learned to try to make their college experience better,” Flynn said.
Like former assistant coach and ’19 alumnus Daniel Booker, Flynn’s scoring average still remains in the university’s all-time top 15.
After his college run, Flynn played in two major amateur championships in 2009 — the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the U.S. Amateur — before pursuing a professional career and participating in three of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournaments.

After a short stint in the corporate world, Flynn returned to his alma mater as the fourth consecutive Belmont alumnus on golf staff, and now coaches the sport he loves.
“Coaching was one of those roles that I really wanted to try my hand at and see what it would look like,” Flynn said. “So when this opportunity popped up, we started discussing it and I feel like I would have regretted it if I didn’t jump at the opportunity.”
Head coach Scott Flynn, of no relation, believes Brenton Flynn is a perfect fit for Belmont golf, he said.
“He has a real good sense of Belmont’s culture and knows that we want to do things the right way and expects our students to represent the university in a first-class manner,” the head coach said. “He certainly understands that from his playing days at Belmont.”
“He’s committed to helping our guys get better, which is the nature of our game. There’s always something to work on in golf.”
In the golf team’s first 2021-2022 tournament — their first with the new assistant coach on board — the Bruins placed 6th at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Huntington, West Virginia, Sept. 13-14.
And most recently, the team finished 4th at the Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tennessee, Oct. 4-5.
Many of the current athletes in the men’s golf program feel like they can relate to their new assistant coach because he can draw on his experience as a former Belmont player himself.
Senior Evan Davis, Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year for the 2020-2021 season, said the new assistant coach is already fitting right in.
“He’s very personable,” Davis said. “He’s almost like a father figure to an extent for us. He molded with the team from the first day.”
At the moment, Belmont men’s golf is in Kennesaw, Georgia, competing in the Monday-Tuesday Pinetree Intercollegiate tournament, using the coaching addition to reach greater goals now and in future challenges.
