Star freshman goalkeeper Mertcan Akar comes to Belmont all the way from Cologne, Germany.
It’s the soccer standout’s first time in the United States, and he’s already making his mark. Akar has had at least five saves in all 12 Belmont matches. In fact, the Bruin is leading the Horizon League in saves.
Even with his accomplishments, Akar is humble.
“Team success always comes first. Any individual success is a bonus,” said Akar.
Akar has been preparing his whole life for his promising international career.
In Germany, Akar’s undefeated team won the league championship for six years. It was Akar’s proudest moment, and, since the beginning, his dad was right by his side.
“My dad was my team’s coach as a kid. A teammate got injured one day, so my dad put me in as goalkeeper. I used to cry about being in the goal, but eventually the position just stuck,” said Akar.
Now, Akar is ready to prove himself far away from home. He’s found playing in the United States is all about athleticism and strength.
“It was tough at the beginning, but I’m extremely happy with my decision to gain experience playing for Belmont. I want to be as successful as possible on and off the court,” said Akar.
Akar is already finding his place with the Bruins.
“The people take me in here as one of their own. I’ll do anything for the team,” said Akar.
The goalkeeper will be one to watch this season. Support Akar and his teammates at a game soon.
