Jaime Giraldo dreamed of coming to the U.S. from his hometown of Bogota, Colombia, and now he’s making that dream a reality as a freshman member of the Belmont men’s soccer team.
“Six months ago I was playing for Fortaleza, that was my team in Colombia, but I was only playing without studying,” said Giraldo. “In Colombia it’s almost impossible to do both.”
Someday he will have to decide if he wants to keep playing soccer or pursue a career in business.
For now, he just wants to represent his team and country well.
“My goal is to make history as a team,” he said. “I also want to make a good recognition and impression for the Colombian people. That’s a major thing.”
Giraldo’s favorite thing about Belmont is the kindness of everyone he has met, and he hopes that more students will attend soccer games this year.
“We make good dances when we score,” he said.
Giraldo wears No. 18 on the field. Watch him and the rest of the team return to E.S. Rose Park to face conference rivals Wright State on Oct. 7.
