Men’s soccer earns first conference win in OT thriller

The men’s soccer team strung together a furious comeback to earn its first Horizon League victory in a 2-1 double overtime thriller Saturday against Green Bay.

Freshman Rashad Hyacenth scored the game winner in the second overtime period.

“It feels great to get the goal, but it feels even better to get the victory for the team. We’ve been working really hard for this,” said Hyacenth as his teammates snuck up behind him and drenched him with gatorade. “It’s all about the team.”

A dangerous free kick from Lawrence Talery set up Defrim Ramushevski for the goal to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

After the half, Hyacenth found junior Cole Peters who headed it past Dani Alvarado to equalize the score.

Both teams fought hard to take the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, Ryan Tapley served a ball from the left side into the six-yard box right to Hyacenth, who headed it to the far post for the game-winner.

Grayson Rector recorded two saves on the night.

“It was exciting. We showed up in the second half played great and kept going and in the second 45 and in overtime we earned it and we were rewarded for it with a great goal,” said Belmont coach Bryan Green.

The Bruins travel to Peoria, Ill. to face Bradley Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning for its home finale on Nov. 1.
