Men’s soccer rebounds with 2-0 win

Nights after losing to longtime rival Lipscomb, the Belmont men’s soccer team clinched a 2-0 victory against the Jacksonville Dolphins Saturday night at Rose Park.

“We just needed to come out, ready to play and just try to get a goal,” starting right back Alfred Edmonds said. “That’s really what we just needed, to get a goal, and we got it.”

Edmonds helped get the night’s scoring started when he passed the ball across the field to forward Sam Miller. He then buried the ball in the back of the net on a header than came with two minutes left in the first half.

Head coach Earle Davidson said his team’s fundamental plays as a group led to the victory.

“We wanted to focus on making sure that we worked for each other and that we did the simple things right, and I thought we did that very well tonight,” he said.

After Thursday’s loss, Davidson said was very happy with his team that completed enough opportunities for the win at Rose Park.

“Honestly I feel like we’ve been playing well so we wanted to make sure we get a result that we deserve,” he said.

With a one-goal lead, the Bruins came out strong the second half as they earned multiple corners and out-possessing their opponent.

Late in the half, junior Diego Figueroa saw the keeper was off his line and chipped him from nearly 40 yards out to earn the Bruin’s second and final goal of the night.

The game between the Bruins and Dolphins was consistently even, as both teams tallied 11 shots apiece on the night.

Belmont had successful attacks out of the back and many opportunities were created from forward Joonas Bask winning multiple headers out of the air.

The Bruin’s boosted their record to 4-6-1 with the win Saturday night. The team will travel to Ohio Wednesday to battle the Vikings of Cleveland State.
