There was a miscommunication between Belmont officials and the Belmont Vision on this story. It and an accompanying article were taken down for two days. It was reposted on Oct. 4.

Longtime music business professor Dan Keen has left Belmont after sexually explicit posts surfaced on what appears to be his X and Threads accounts.

On an account named DenverDanKeen, which has been active for 12 years, Keen posted selfies of himself with his mother and tweets to his children.

But a check of his “replies” showed a much different story, with Keen responding to sexually explicit images and accounts.

On what appears to be Keen’s personal X, formerly known as Twitter, and Threads accounts are:

  • Replies to sexually explicit posts

  • Selfies with himself and his family members

  • Replies discussing sexual acts

  • Replies commenting on women’s breast sizes

  • A reply from Belmont University’s official X account

  • Replies commenting on the appearance of women in sexually explicit posts

  • Replies to the Belmont confessions X account

  • Reposts and tags on posts from Belmont University’s official X account

  • Replies to students commenting under Belmont confessions posts on X

  • Replies referring to Belmont graduates as cute, hot and perfect

Midweek, Belmont announced that Keen was no longer employed at the university. He has been with Belmont for 14 years teaching in the music business department.

Julia Copeland, director of communications, confirmed his exit but was unable to give specifics on the reason for his departure.

"The University does not monitor employees’ personal social media accounts, though will address concerns that arise from such accounts if they are brought to HR’s attention,” Copeland said in a statement.

“Speaking in general terms, there is an expectation outlined in the Employee Handbook that all Belmont employees support the mission and values of the University. Employees who engage in behavior that betrays these values may be subject to disciplinary action.”

While the Vision could not independently verify the account belonged to Keen, it did have the same profile picture and bio as Keen’s LinkedIn account. It also included selfies of Keen with family members and reposts from the official Belmont University X account.

The X account and Threads have been discussed and reposted on Fizz with students commenting on the strangeness of the posts.

“It’s actually crazy how Dan Keen has spent his whole life building this huge career - like the man is Grammy nominated and he’s about to lose so much respect in the industry for his stupidity,” said a Belmont user on Fizz.

Others questioned why his online behavior was not brought to the university’s attention sooner.

“How did it take so long for people to report Dan Keen’s account,” said another Belmont user on Fizz.

Multiple attempts were made to reach Keen on his listed numbers. The Vision also tried to reach Keen via his X and Threads accounts, but the messaging feature had been disabled.
