Ohio Valley Conference postpones fall sports championships

The Ohio Valley Conference has postponed fall sports championships until the spring of 2021.

The decision to postpone fall sports for the semester came just weeks after the OVC’s original decision to resume competition on Sept. 17.

The postponement affects Belmont women’s soccer, track and field, volleyball, and cross country.

“We are heartbroken, yet understanding of the decision made by the Ohio Valley Conference Board of Presidents regarding fall sports competition,”said Belmont Athletics Director Scott Corley.

Though teams are still eligible to play their non-conference schedule, the announcement moves league play to the spring, in order to name a conference champion.

“The competitor in me – and in all Belmont Bruins – desperately longs for a return to game day. However, after thoughtful consideration, it was determined now is not the appropriate time.”

The decision will also affect fall schedules for men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis, as well as non-traditional competition for softball and baseball.

It is unclear how the postponement will affect the length of the conference and postseason for existing spring sports, but the OVC has confirmed its plan to play winter and spring sports is unaffected by their decision.

“Our devotion to Belmont Bruins – past and present – is unwavering,” said Corley, “and our entire department will continue to provide the comprehensive support required to navigate the days ahead.”
