Belmont softball opened up a three-game series against Missouri State with a 4-2 victory at E.S. Rose Park on Friday.

The win marks the red-hot Bruins’ 10th win in 11 games and puts them in prime position to win their fourth-straight series.

Belmont starting pitcher Maya Johnson was dominant, posting ten strikeouts in a complete game win.

The only blemish on her day was the two-run homer she surrendered to Missouri State senior Annie Mueller, who was able to muscle a fastball over the center field wall in the fourth inning.

Belmont had to scrap out the rest of its runs, scoring two in the fifth inning with the help of an error, an escaped rundown, multiple failed Missouri State challenges and finally a sac-fly which brought the game to its final score of 4-2.

The frustrating night for the Bears was brought to a head in the seventh when their head coach Holly Hesse was ejected after exchanging words with an umpire.

Maya Johnson closed the door, striking out three of four batters in the seventh inning shortly thereafter and improving her record to 13-3 on the season.

The Bruins’ record improves their overall record to 25-10 and their conference record to 11-3.

They will play the remainder of the series against Missouri State this weekend.
