Volleyball Sweeps Final Regular Season Match

Belmont Volleyball won its final regular season 3-0 against the Murray State Racers.

The first set began with a kill from junior Brooke Gilleland and was immediately followed by another from freshman Lucy Kay.

Strong blocks from redshirt junior Bella Mathis, graduate student Kamryn Olson and freshman Alivia Keegan aided the Bruins in their 15-11 lead at timeout.

But the Racers began taking advantage of the Bruins' space by tipping the ball into the open areas.

Gilleland continued to have strong kills throughout the set to lead Belmont to a 20-14 lead at the Murray State timeout.

Following this timeout, the Racers went on a 5-0 run against the Bruins.

The ending of the set was back and forth until the Murray State timeout at 23-21.

But the Racers had strong blocks that allowed for the tie at 23.

The Bruins then took the lead, and a kill from freshman Mialee Dabbelt won the first set for the Bruins 25-23.

The second set began with a kill from Murray State and was immediately combatted with a kill from Kay.

Senior Elizabeth Godfrey led the Bruins with multiple digs, saving them from the Murray State spikes.

The set went back and forth until the Bruins pulled away to lead 19-14.

Belmont began to lose its stride and called a timeout at 23-21.

Dabbelt once again finished the set with a kill, giving the Bruins a 25-23 win.

Gilleland set the tone for the third set with a kill, which led the Bruins to a 5-1 lead.

Murray State hitter Ella Vogel challenged the Bruins with multiple kills and digs.

But Mathis fought back with kills to quickly put the Bruins ahead.

Senior Kristen Clemons came into the game with an immediate kill and continued the Bruins’ lead.

Murray State called its final timeout at 22-14.

Clemons finished the game with a block and won the final set 25-16.

The Bruins set a program record of 63 kills in a three-set match.

This was the last game of the regular season for Belmont with the Bruins still waiting to see if they qualify for the MVC Tournament.
