The Belmont women’s basketball team kicked off Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday with a 66-52 win over Jacksonville State.
The Bruins and the Gamecocks started off neck and neck, but Jacksonville State took a 21-15 lead with less than four minutes left in the first half.
It didn’t take long for senior Darby Maggard and junior Ellie Harmeyer to help Belmont respond with an 11-0 run to end the first half, allowing the Bruins to take a 26-21 lead.
After halftime, Belmont ran away with the game — thanks to great performances from Harmeyer, Maggard and freshman Conley Chinn.
Harmeyer picked up another double double — with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She has been one of the most important players for the Bruins this season, leading the team in points per game with 14.3.
Maggard also had a great start to conference play with 19 points.
Thursday’s victory was the Bruins 47th straight conference win and improved the team’s record to 8-4.
