The Belmont women’s basketball team pulled off a 70-65 come-from-behind win against the Murray State Racers Wednesday night at the Curb Event Center, pushing the Bruins to 7-0 in conference play.
The Bruins opened strong in the first quarter, tallying 12 points in the first four minutes, thanks to a pair of three-pointers from senior Kylee Smith and junior Maura Muensterman.
The Racers made quick work of the Bruins defense in the start of the second quarter, hitting six field goals to take the lead over Belmont.
Junior Darby Maggard responded with a 8-0 scoring run in the fourth, pushing the Bruins ahead to regain the lead. A close back-and-forth of scoring ensued as the clock ticked down, but the Bruins, taking advantage of several late fouls, closed the game with a 70-65 win.
Wednesday night’s close battle against the Racers was not lacking in stellar performances from the Bruins’ lineup. Senior Sally McCabe nearly earned a triple-double, with 14 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks. Maggard led the Bruins with 16 points. Smith followed closely with 15 points.
Catch the Bruins again Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Curb Event Center, as they host conference foes Austin Peay.
