One goal was all Belmont women’s soccer needed to continue its hot streak with a 1-0 over the University of Evansville on Thursday.
“I thought we did a great job tonight,” head coach Kelsey Cameron said. “Sometimes, it’s not going to be pretty. But I think we did a great job of just finishing the game.”
The first half didn’t start how the Bruins hoped as the Purple Aces seemed to control the tempo of the game.
“I felt like they won the physical battle and beat us to first and second balls,” Cameron said.
But towards the end of the half, the momentum shifted in the Bruins’ favor.
Off a free kick from freshman defender Teagan Downs, junior defender Kennedy Wise took the ball, crossed over the Evansville defender and finished with a shot in the top-right corner to give the Bruins the 1-0 lead.
After halftime, the Bruins carried over that momentum, stopping the Purple Aces from finding the net and securing the 1-0 win.
“I thought the girls came out and did a better job,” Cameron said. “They put our backs under a lot of pressure, so I thought we did a great job.”
Graduate goalkeeper Sydney Jones had five saves and posted her second clean sheet of the season.
“I think it just continues to build momentum,” Cameron said. “I think she’s done a great job back there. She kept everything organized back there when our defenders were under a ton of pressure.”
Belmont looks to continue its unbeaten streak when it travels to Illinois State University on Sunday.
