Bruin Beats: Honors Program Director Dr. Jonathan Thorndike

The Vision has teamed up with leaders from organizations across campus to bring you weekly Spotify playlists from students and staff.

For today’s installment, Belmont Honors Program Director Dr. Jonathan Thorndike shared 10 of his favorite songs with the Vision.

All of these songs have specific stories and memories associated with them. I realize they are old school, but so am I, so that’s fine. Serious anniversaries of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Joshua Tree caused me to reflect on first hearing those songs by The Beatles and U2. Sgt. Pepper’s holds up really well — after 50 years, it still sounds revolutionary, imaginative and whimsical.

I also have a serious interest in Celtic musical traditions from England, Scotland and Ireland, and love choral music and classical, which is too long to fit (Mozart, Bach and Handel).

Neil Young was a favorite for me in college, and “Harvest Moon” makes me cry because the band played it at my daughter’s wedding reception.
