Toby Nicholson is one of Belmont’s newest tennis players, all the way from Hitchin, England, right next to London.
He got his start playing tennis from one of his biggest influences, his dad.
“My dad got a scholarship to Memphis State, and that’s where he met my mom. So I wanted to do the same thing,” said Nicholson.
Nicholson always had an interest in Belmont, and it was on his list of schools to choose from. He never actually thought he would get in, though.
“I didn’t think I would get in because I thought the tennis team was too strong, but then they offered me a scholarship and I took it,” he said.
Throughout his 10 years of playing tennis, Nicholson’s main goal was to get a scholarship so he could come to America.
“All those times where I hated it, my parents said if I stopped playing tennis then I wouldn’t get to come to America, so I kept going,” said Nicholson.
Nicholson will suit up as a Bruin for the first time in January when conference matches start up.
