Concert for a cause: bands to help end hunger with upcoming show

Belmont bands and music management companies are uniting on Saturday to not only fill the crowd’s ears with music but to also fill local shelters with food. Hooligan Recordings and Innovo Management LLC are sponsoring a concert at the High Watt where each band will donate a portion of its proceeds to Rock4Hunger. Bands participating include Mr. B & The Tribal Hoose, Royal Hoax, Us & Them and Auction the Secret. Royal Hoax started Rock4Hunger in 2009, and since then the band h

Dropping the beat to drop cancer

As part of Belmont’s Up ‘Til Dawn child cancer awareness week, the Beaman Tuesday night felt less like a student center and more like a scene reminiscent of “8 Mile.” But instead of losing themselves in the music, students were selfless as they rapped to end childhood cancer during the “Rap it Up: Rapping Up the Battle with Childhood Cancer” event. The event, which served the dual purpose of promoting both Up ‘Til Dawn and Belmont’s hip-hop community, also helped raise funds

Christmas at Belmont didn’t fall flat

Faculty, students and alumni gathered in Massey Concert Hall on Saturday night to watch the annual Christmas at Belmont performance to kick off the holiday season. Every other year, Christmas at Belmont is filmed and airs on PBS, but this year was not a filming year for the event. Opening the night with “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Jazzmin sang with sweet harmonies as snowflakes were projected on the side walls. Its jazzy sound set a warm and comfortable mood, an

OK Go puts on more than an OK show

OK Go may be a four-piece group, but in their performance Friday night at Mercy Lounge, a sold-out crowd of 500 people might as well have been added to their lineup. The band, touring in support of its new album “Hungry Ghosts,” took the stage for almost two hours and never once allowed the energy to decrease or the crowd to not be entertained–or, for that matter, not be involved. “It was great,” said lead singer and guitarist Damian Kulash. “We had a fun time–sweaty and deli

Live on the Green review, week two

The 90 degree weather and sticky humidity wasn’t enough to stop 18,000 screaming fans from attending the second week of Live On The Green 2014. The lineup, which featured artists Goodbye June, Wild Cub and headliner The Head and The Heart, was a strong follow-up to the festivals debut, which included Spanish Gold, The Weeks and Nashvillians City and Colour. The evening started with a warm welcome from opener, Goodbye June. The band ushered in the evening as fans tried to stay

    Phillips rocks Curb Event Center

As a laid-back 22-year-old wearing TOMS shoes, a pair of dark jeans and a plaid shirt, Phillip Phillips could have been mistaken by just another student at Belmont when he hit the stage on Sunday. Yet, at 6:15 pm, when the doors of the Curb Event Center opened, you could see why Phillips was the guy on stage, singing almost every single night on tour and preparing to travel with John Mayer. Dozens of screaming fans ran towards the front rows like their lives depended on it. T

Oratorio’s ‘Mass for Peace’ set for Monday

Let us have peace. This common war statement is woven throughout Belmont’s Oratorio Chorus performance set for Mon, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Massey Concert Hall. The 200 member-plus choir will be performing “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. “When I discovered the piece, I knew right away it would be perfect for our Belmont students,” said Jane Warren, the performance’s director and associate professor of conducting and ensembles at Belmont.
