Author Shane Claiborne returns to campus

Bestselling author, activist and speaker Shane Claiborne will speak to Belmont students at 10 a.m. on Nov. 22 at Belmont Heights Baptist Church.

Claiborne is a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia. According to The Simple Way’s website, it “has helped birth and connect radical faith communities around the world.”

“We are thrilled to have Shane join us again,” said Vice President of Spiritual Development, Todd Lake. ” He drew 1,000 students last time, and we anticipate a similar turnout at Belmont Heights Baptist Church this time as well.”

After graduating from Eastern University and completing graduate work at Princeton Seminary, Claiborne worked alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta for 10 weeks. Also, Claiborne served at Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago. He travelled to Iraq and spent three weeks with the Iraq Peace Team in Baghdad.

Featured in the DVD series “Another World Is Possible” and the author of “The Irresistible revolution,” “Jesus for President,” and “Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers,” Claiborne writes and speaks about “peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus.” His work has appeared in Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and National Public Radio.

Claiborne travels to nearly every state in the US and to several countries and speaks more than 100 times a year. Claiborne visited Belmont in 2008 and discussed his book “Jesus for President.”

This event will count as a Christian faith convocation credit.
