BSA hosts candlelight vigil for MLK Day

As a way to officially recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Black Student Association hosted a candlelight vigil and invited all students to participate Monday evening.

Starting at 7 p.m., students were given candles to light and hold as they made their way around the interior of campus. As the students walked, they sang songs to recognize the efforts and sacrifices made by many black Americans.

The vigil ended in a gathering around the Bell Tower as students sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

With the combination of the singing and the reading of small biographies of other black Americans who lost their lives, the candlelight vigil was a somber opening to the rest of the events planned for the week.

The next event is a worship service Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the chapel inside the Wedgewood Academic Center.
