SGA welcomes new leaders, prepares to ramp up student engagement

The Student Government Association conducted its first legislative session Monday via Zoom with a peaceful transition of power, a cabinet full of new faces — and its first legislative resolution.

Stevie Giorni, the outgoing president, commended the university for another successful year.

Giorni highlighted the evolving presence and necessity of student government on campus, the increase in social media usage, the ability to fully transition online, as well as helping host last year’s presidential debate.

Giorni then swore in SGA’s new leaders: president Zaid Hatem and Vice President Zach Lambert.

Hatem said he is “humbled and excited to serve.”

Hatem said his administration intends to keep SGA’s mission the same, while innovating where necessary.

Lambert expanded on the welcoming opportunities that both Belmont and SGA offers to students. As a transfer student, Lambert has been a member of SGA for several semesters and was able to lead the organization and manage its $54,000 budget as vice president.

Communications director McKensy Malin intends to further cultivate engagement and organizational growth within her role.

“I want us to focus less on our followers, and more engagement,” Malin said.

To that end, WebMaster Gracie Watson is restoring SGA’s presence on BruinLink, saying she has already removed much of the outdated information from the last time SGA’s BruinLink community was active — as far back as four years ago.

Matthew Nicholson, director of committee development, featured this year’s four committees for SGA members to be a part of. Finance, Student Programs, Campus Affairs, Constitution and Ethics culminate the four committees. SGA Senators will meet in the chosen committees starting Monday, Feb. 1.

Executive adviser Artem Smith introduced the Senate’s first resolution: “Senate Resolution 2021.” This piece of legislation creates a bridge between SGA and other Belmont campus programs via the creation of “Senate Liaison” roles. The roles will be open to all clubs and organizations at Belmont. Senate Resolution 2021 was passed.

SGA’s next meeting is on Monday, Jan. 25.
