Women’s basketball advances to OVC Tournament semifinal with win over SEMO

The women’s basketball team survived the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Wednesday, defeating Southeast Missouri 74-65 in Evansville.

Senior Jenny Roy scored her 1,000th point when she sank a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Roy scored 6 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists.

Junior Ellie Harmeyer picked up her 13th double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Junior Maddie Wright came in clutch in the first half with three 3-pointers that kept the Bruins within striking distance of the Redhawks.

After narrowly beating SEMO in its final game of the regular season 92-86 on Saturday, the Bruins struggled to make shots against the Redhawks on Wednesday, only shooting 28.6 percent from behind the arch in the second quarter.

The Bruins trailed by a small margin for most of the first half but tied it up at 31 at the end of the second quarter.

Senior Darby Maggard only scored 5 points in the entire first half but scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 3-5 from the field as well as draining two threes.

One of Maggard’s threes came with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, extending Belmont’s lead to 63-57. Maggard went on to score 21 points overall.

The Bruins will head to the OVC Tournament semifinal for the seventh straight time and will play the winner of the Austin Peay vs. Tennessee Tech on Friday at 1 p.m..
