SEASON PREVIEW: Belmont baseball brings experience to the diamond, first pitch Friday

The road to Omaha begins here in Nashville. And the Belmont baseball team stands ready to crush anything thrown its way this spring over the course of the 56-game schedule. The Bruins will face off against their usual Ohio Valley Conference opponents in their last shot at an OVC title, in addition to taking on some high-profile programs outside the conference. Belmont head coach Dave Jarvis, who enters his 25th season with the Bruins this spring, expressed his enthusiasm to g

Belmont Athletics brings fall 2021 to a close, delivering hard work and hardware for a record-breaki

As Belmont enters its spring semester, some student-athletes look forward to their seasons while some reflect on the successes of the fall. Through the struggle and stress of the student-athlete lifestyle, Belmont’s cross-country, soccer and volleyball players followed through in the university’s final Ohio Valley Conference season. Belmont Athletics collectively gained one glorious conference win, two second-place finishes and two tournament appearances from the five teams c

Bruins baseball, softball, golf move into a new home base at the old home field

Belmont student-athletes on the baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf teams now have their own indoor practice space at E.S. Rose Park. Standing two stories tall with coaching offices, locker rooms and meeting rooms on the top floor and batting tunnels, a bullpen and golf bays on the bottom, the much-needed space will give four of Belmont’s teams a new home base. “This will be the first time in 25 years that I’ve been at Belmont and we had our own locker room facility

Bruin baseball players across the country wrap up summer league play

For many of Belmont’s baseball players, summer doesn’t mean vacation. Finishing their 2020-2021 Ohio Valley Conference run by receiving the OVC Team Sportsmanship Award for the sixth time, 19 Bruins sought action in the collegiate summer baseball leagues around the country — with mixed success. “We have a good number of players that went out and competed and had very strong performances this summer,” said Belmont baseball head coach Dave Jarvis. “Several of them competed in t

Baseball player’s bond with family tightens after brother’s diagnosis

Cody Liskey, 14, and his family thought they were visiting the hospital to deal with his appendicitis. However, while Cody’s appendix was fine, the doctors would find something more dangerous in the teenager’s body: an adult form of kidney cancer. Cody’s older brother Brandon Liskey, a freshman on Belmont’s baseball team, was in just as much shock as the rest of his family when the diagnosis came through on Jan. 2, said Brandon. Brandon would be there to support his family fo

Coach Dave Jarvis: 18 years with Belmont baseball

Empty stands rise up behind home plate, the netting sways and rolls, Van Halen blasts through the speaker system and yet it almost seems like the only thing you can hear is the sound of baseball. The sounds of the prototypical ball park setting. The ringing of the aluminum bats, the thud of a broken in glove catching a ball, the crunching of gravel and dirt, the sound the crowd makes when the ball is hit deep and they all rise to their feet, the smell of hotdogs and popcorn i

No. 2 Dores blast Belmont 9-3

The Belmont baseball team’s first loss of the season came 9-3 to their crosstown foe Vanderbilt Tuesday afternoon. “Vanderbilt tonight was a very good team. There’s a reason they are ranked second in the country right now,” coach Dave Jarvis said. “It gives us direction to work with here on forward.” Sophomore left-hander Dan Ludwig was the losing pitcher for the Bruins at Rose Park. In four innings, he allowed seven hits and five runs and struck out four. Left-hander Philip

Bruins win season opener, retire Whitten’s number

After a late ninth-inning rally, the Belmont baseball team held on to win its season opener 4-3 against the Valparaiso Crusaders Friday night at Rose Park. The Bruins’ 4-0 lead was narrowed in the final inning after two hits followed by dropped fly ball in left field and a hit batter. “We had put ourselves in jeopardy with a couple of missed plays and opportunity to end the game,” coach Dave Jarvis said. “Anything could have happened right there, but fortunately it went our w

Baseball swings for third straight championship

After a season that included a program-record 39 wins and a NCAA tournament berth, the Belmont baseball team hopes to match that success in its first season in the Ohio Valley Conference. Last Friday, the Bruins were picked to finish second in the conference’s preseason poll behind Austin Peay, the OVC’s back-to-back champions. This year’s squad is returning 19 lettermen and six positional starters including last year’s Atlantic Sun tournament MVP Judah Akers. He led the team

    Bruins eliminated in 6-3 loss

After losing their first game in an NCAA regional Friday, the Belmont baseball team found itself in a familiar situation. Last year, the Bruins lost their first game ever in the NCAA tournament, but then won their next two games reach the regional finals. This year, however, was different for the Bruins. They lost to the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 6-3 Saturday in Baton Rouge, La., ending their season and eliminating them from the NCAA tournament. The ULM Warhawks took an early
