Men’s tennis defends the den with strong singles performances against Lipscomb

The Boulevard is still Belmont’s after the Bruins aced Lipscomb University 5-2 Friday night. Only the second faceoff on the spring schedule, men’s tennis is still getting into the swing of things for the season but was able to bring home another win after triumphing over Lee University on Jan. 22. After losing the doubles point to the Bisons, the Bruins began play on the shaky side, but Belmont’s redemption was in sight when it came to the singles matches. “They have a really

Battling for Boulevard bragging rights: A look at the Belmont, Lipscomb rivalry

Just 1.7 miles. A short walk, and an even faster drive, but it’s a distance that carries 68 years of rivalry between the schools at either end of the journey down Belmont Boulevard. Belmont University and Lipscomb University first met on the basketball court in 1953 and have been battling for bragging rights on the Boulevard ever since. The two schools have met 148 times over the series’ history, with Lipscomb leading by a razor-thin margin of 75 wins to the Bruins’ 73 across

The Boulevard belongs to Belmont in the 75th showing of historic basketball rivalry

Belmont basketball emerged victorious Thursday night as the men’s and women’s teams triumphed over hometown rival Lipscomb University in the 75th Battle of the Boulevard. Both the Bruins and the Bisons were well-represented in the stands; students and fans filled the Curb Event Center to near-full capacity, bringing energy and exhilaration to Belmont’s home court. Among the standout Bruins of the night, guard Tuti Jones scored a career-high 29 points for the women’s team, hel

Women’s tennis puts up a fight in first-ever Belmont Fall Invitational

Mixed results befell Belmont women’s tennis as they hosted an inaugural home tournament on the newly opened Crockett Center rooftop courts this weekend. Invitations were extended to the University of North Alabama Lions and the Murray State University Racers, as well as the Lipscomb University Bisons — who were up first to face the Bruins on Friday. Ultimately, the Bruins made their mark on the home courts, banking more wins than losses as a team with 6-4 in doubles and 10-9

Heavy loss in three frames at volleyball’s Battle of the Boulevard

Belmont women’s volleyball fell 0-3 to rivals Lipscomb University in an away match Tuesday. Although Belmont leads in the all-time Battle of the Boulevard series against Lipscomb, the Bisons have won 14 of the last 15 match-ups and have not dropped to Belmont at home since 2006. Tuesday’s loss marks the Bruins’ fifth consecutive defeat of the season. Going into the game, the Bruins sat at 2-4 for the 2021-2022 season while the Bisons came into the game at 1-6. However, Lipsco

Belmont soccer draws 1-1 against Lipscomb in latest Battle of the Boulevard

In a storied rivalry spanning multiple seasons, the Belmont men’s soccer team took on No. 22 ranked Lipscomb University Tuesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. In a relentless battle, the Bruins managed to stave off an aggressive Bison team to walk away with a 1-1 draw. “It was a rivalry game, a tale of two halves. I thought we were really good in the first half,” said Belmont head coach David Costa. “Gritty performance overall to come away still with the point and to k

Lecrae to release “Unashamed” book during his Higher Learning tour

Nominated among the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and Childish Gambino for “Best Rap Performance” at the Grammys, Lecrae is no stranger to the rap world. Despite his success, Lecrae described not being fully accepted in the inner circle of celebrities in an excerpt he released on Medium from his book “Unashamed.” “As I’ve said in songs and speeches, if you live for people’s acceptance, you’ll die from their rejection. This belief has made it possible to keep doing what

McSpadden throws himself into hard work for track and field team

Junior thrower Del McSpadden never expected the success he has had since coming to Belmont as a transfer, but he is enjoying every minute of it. “I never expected myself to be one of the best in the OVC,” said McSpadden. McSpadden has been on Belmont University’s track and field team only for a year. Yet, his progress on the team has been outstanding. McSpadden has a lifting routine on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He practices everyday focusing on his turns and drill work, a

Belmont owns Boulevard with 100-point game, 16-point win

The 137th Battle of the Boulevard tipped off Tuesday with the Bruins coming out on top over the Bisons 105-89 for Belmont’s first 100-point game on the season. “It’s a huge deal, it takes away the pain of losing,” said senior guard Craig Bradshaw. Lipscomb is ahead in the series 73-63, but this win marks Belmont’s eighth-straight victory. The Bruins got off to a hot start after winning the tip-off followed by a Bradshaw three-pointer. The Bruins had a total of 16 threes on th

WBB returns home, routs rival Lipscomb by 20 points

The women’s basketball team returned home for the first time in more than two weeks and defeated rival Lipscomb 80-60 at the Curb Event Center Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins clinched their fifth consecutive win over the Lady Bisons in the Battle of the Boulevard series. Sophomore Frankie Joubran went 7-for-7 from the field to record a career-high 18 points and also notched 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. “She’s a double-double machine. Water runs thicker than blood

Rivals like Belmont and Lipscomb usually don’t join forces together. But when it’s for a good cause to raise money for organizations such as Blood: Water Mission, it proves sometimes water runs thicker than blood. Both universities are partnering to raise money for Blood: Water Mission in a competitive fundraiser called Battle for the Pump, the first event of its kind. The idea of the contest is to see which school can reach the $5,000 goal first–for an ideal total of $10,000

    Response to my column

I have chosen to take the column down not because it was untrue, but because I did not intend to upset anyone. I take this matter very seriously and I would never falsely accuse anyone of saying things this extreme. I know what I heard and I stand by my words. I did not intend to upset anyone at Lipscomb or make them look bad as a community. It was the words of a few individuals, but it is being received as attacking the whole community, which was not my intention. Everything

Women’s Soccer edged by Lipscomb in exhibition

Facing off against its rival in a preseason exhibition match, the Belmont women’s soccer team fell to the Lipscomb Lady Bisons 2-0 at Rose Park Friday afternoon. Lipscomb sophomore forward Ellen Lundy scored a pair of goals in the 6th and 81st minutes to help lead the Lady Bisons past the Bruins. Despite the loss for the Bruins, Belmont coach Heather Henson said she was proud of the team’s ability to make adjustments between the halves. “Our first half wasn’t the best half. W

Belmont squeaks by Lipscomb 87-83 for Battle win

In a game where Belmont struggled to shoot from the free throw line, free throws are what saved the Bruins in a tightly contested Battle of the Boulevard game. After drawing a foul with 7.5 seconds to go, JJ Mann sank a shot from the charity stripe to give Belmont the 87-83 victory against an aggressive Lipscomb team. “Well it was pretty crazy, first of all, but it was lots of fun. It’s college basketball on the road, it’s great,” Mann said. “It was so tight the whole time, a

Fight for ‘LU’ moniker pointless argument

As a Belmont student, I’m not normally one to stick up for Lipscomb. Lipscomb is our enemy, our adversary, our foe. But, when I discovered that Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, Va., wanted exclusive rights to the “LU” logo and brought legal counsel to do so, I realized the enemy of our enemy is not always our friend. Here’s a little background. Lipscomb was founded in 1891 by David Lipscomb and James Harding. They believed that an individual’s education involved spir

    Men’s soccer welcomes independent status

Instead of dwelling on being the only team on campus without a conference the Belmont men’s soccer team is embracing their independent identity heading into the 2013 season. Senior forward/midfielder Cody Stratton hopes the team can strengthen that identity by building off each and every game throughout the season, especially winning home matches and making Rose Park “our own fortress.” Bruin coach Earle Davidson agrees. “Continuing to get our brand out there and style of pla

    Women bash Bisons 61-39

After a sluggish start, the Belmont women’s basketball team rallied in the second half of this season’s second installment of the Battle of the Boulevard to rout Lipscomb 61-39. “We started off very slowly and had to work ourselves back into the game,” said coach Brittney Ezell. The win was Belmont’s second win against Lipscomb this season. Now the Bruins stand 15-10 overall. Threes from Hannah Phillips and Alex Banks jump-started Lipscomb’s early surge and pushed the Bisons

Battle: Belmont-Lipscomb games go beyond hoops

Separated by less than three miles, the Battle of the Boulevard rivalry between Belmont and Lipscomb is one of the physically closest rivalries in the nation. For the past nine years, that rivalry came with more implications than bragging rights with both teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference. But starting this year, Belmont made the switch from the Atlantic Sun to the Ohio Valley Conference. This change in conference has prompted Belmont’s athletics teams to carry out the sch

Battle: Schools keep rivalry alive after OVC move

After surviving the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division I athletics and a move to the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Battle of the Boulevard rivalry has reached another crossroad as Belmont transitions into the Ohio Valley Conference. Touted by some, including ESPN, as one of the most heated mid-major rivalries in the country, the Battle of the Boulevard has been played off-and-on since 1953. “The history and tradition keep it going. I don’t know what the Lipscomb people did to the
